That Zany Virgin Mary Spotted Again! This Time In "Underpass Stain"

CHICAGO, Illinois (AP) – A steady stream of the faithful and the curious, many carrying flowers and candles, have flocked to an expressway underpass for a view of a yellow and white stain on a concrete wall that some believe is an image of the Virgin Mary. Police have patrolled the emergency turnoff area under the Kennedy Expressway since Monday as hundreds of people have walked down to see the image and the growing memorial of flowers and candles that surround it. Beside the image is an artist’s rendering of the Virgin Mary embracing Pope John Paul II in a pose some see echoed in the stain. Read article here.

  1. Yeah… i saw this story in the news. I am interested in the whole Mary thing – which seems to be re-engaged in catholic thought with Pope Benedict XVI riffing on Mary in his opening prayer – talk about old skool! If people are still streaming on this thread, it would be interesting to get people’s vibe on Mary… thoughts?

  2. I think one of the best things I’ve read in recent times about Mary was an article in Christianity Today, available here:

A close friend of mine, raised Nazarene but a convert to Anglicanism, once said something to me that took me aback, and yet it was so startlingly clear and obvious that I couldn’t believe I’d never thought of it before…

We were talking about biblical fundamentalists/literalists who won’t budge on the “inerrancy” of scripture, who think that if you concede on the most minute point, the authority of the whole thing comes unravelled – and to my quandry (“What’s up wit’ dat?”), my friend said: “Well, even Protestants need a Pope.”

Ever since then, I’ve tried to recognize the ways in which we Protestants (and especially we evangelicals) replace what we’ve ostensibly lost by our rejection of Catholicism (big-C or little-c, really) with other things…and, as I kinda expressed in the “Popapalooza” thread, I think, deep down, we can’t deal with the fact that the Catholic church considers us “outside” the “True” “Mother” “Church” – really what we want is back in (Jack Byrnes’ [from Meet the Parents]) “Circle of Trust”, but, like the Prodigal Son, we can’t seem to muster the guts or the humility to go back. So we just decry them and assert ourselves (that is, every single fragment of a denomination) as the “True” “Church”, when we really just want to be sons/daughters again…

I’m probably going to get raked for this…maybe no one will read this thread.

But at least read that “Jesus and Mama” article – it’s the shit.

  3. I think you are certainly on to something there with the great protestant search for a mac daddy. The stir surrounding the call of Pope Benedict XVI (‘Joey R’ to his homies) in the Protestant camps certainly points to this discomfort with being ‘outsiders’ to the faith. No matter how you slice the pizza, we ain’t the Alpha and certainly not the Omega… so what is the protestant/seperatists to do in this regard? Keep peeking through the fence I suppose and hope like crazy we didnt nail that 95 thesis on the wrong door there in Wittenburg…
